Fellowship Leadership Update
"I am very happy to announce the addition of Dr. Felipe Perez as the new Fellowship Program Director for IU Geriatrics. He brings to Indiana University six years of experience as the Program Director of University of Illinois-Chicago's geriatric medicine fellowship program. Welcome, Dr. Perez!"

Congratulations to 2008-2009 Geriatric Medicine Fellow Graduates

IU Geriatrics hosted a breakfast to celebrate with Drs. Azita Chehresa and Mohamed Homsi's graduation from the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Chehresa has taken a position with Community Hospital East, as Director of Geriatrics.

Dr. Homsi will be continuing training at Indiana University as a fellow in the Cardiology Division.

We will miss working with you both – you were wonderful geriatric fellows!

Current 2009-2010 Geriatric Fellows

Dr. Sergey Gorbachev is completing his third year of a combined Clinical Geriatric and Gero-informatics fellowship. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency in the Department of Medicine at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Heather Riggs is in the second of four years combined Clinical Geriatric-Hematology/Oncology fellowship. Dr. Riggs completed her Internal Medicine Residency with Wright State University/Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Syed Farhan Hashmi is joining IU Geriatrics as a fellow after completing a five year combined Psychiatry-Internal Medicine Residency at Southern Illinois University in Springfield. He graduated from Medical School at Virgen Milagorsa University Foundation in the Philippines. Farhan is from Lahore, Pakistan.

Dr. Syed Salman Moinuddin began his Geriatric Medicine Fellowship in August, following completion of his Internal Medicine Residency at IU. He graduated from Medical School at Aga Khan University in Pakistan. Sal is from Karachi, Pakistan. Sal is especially interested in specializing in Medical Education.

  • Fellows are funded to attend the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Annual Meeting
  • Fellows have the option to moonlight in a variety of settings based upon approval from their program director

Background

  • Indiana University (IU) has been deemed a Hartford Foundation Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine
  • The IU Geriatrics Fellowship Program is a vibrant program with the capacity to train six fellows per year
  • After completing fellowship training at IU, previous graduates have entered practice in the academic setting or private sector
  • The Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics offer one-year, two-year and three-year tracks for Geriatrics Fellowship Training
  • All residents who are committed to a career in geriatrics and are board certified or board eligible in internal medicine or family medicine are eligible to apply
  • Regardless of track, the first year of training is clinical so that trainees are eligible to sit for the Board Exam in Geriatric Medicine after the first year

Training

  • Fellows' clinical training will occur in three unique settings Wishard Health Services - county hospital, Clarian Health Partners - Indiana University Hospital and Methodist Hospital and the Roudebush VA Medical Center where fellows will see patients across the continuum of care
  • Acute Care for Elders (ACE) inpatient unit and consultation services
  • Community-based extended care facilities
  • Clinics for frail older adults that offer primary, consultative and specialty care
  • House Calls for Seniors Program
  • Subspecialty care in outpatient and inpatient settings (e.g. Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Palliative Care, Geriatric Psychiatry, Podiatry, Osteoporosis, Continence Care, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Alzheimer's Disease)
  • Didactic-type training occurs routinely
    • Weekly clinical conferences (grand rounds, core fellows' content)
    • Monthly journal clubs
  • The second and third years of fellowship are available for fellows pursuing an academic career in Geriatric Medicine with focused training in
    • Research
    • Education
    • Administration
  • Timeline for planning the 2nd year of advanced training.
  • Mentorship is provided by nationally and internationally recognized clinicians, clinician- educators and researchers to assure success
  • Combined fellowships are offered (e.g. Geriatrics-Palliative care, Geriatrics- Rheumatology, Geriatrics-Oncology and Gero-informatics)

Application

  • Interviewing begins in September for the following academic year and is highly competitive as we often fill early
  • You can apply at the ERAS application site, or by using this online form.
  • In order to be considered for a position in the IU Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program you must complete and send in:
    • Application
    • CV
    • Personal Statement
    • Submit four letters of recommendation (one from the program director)
    • USMLE steps 1, 2, and 3
    • ECFMG if applicable
    • Come to IU for an interview (by invitation only)
