Training Description
Funded by a National Research Service Award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the two-year Indiana General Health Services Research Fellowship seeks qualified applicants – both physician and PhD (or equivalent) – who are interested in the core areas of health services research, patient safety, outcomes, implementation science, quality improvement, systems redesign, and applied medical informatics. Located within Regenstrief Institute, Inc. and the IU Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research, training preceptors aim to:
- Recruit and develop professionals committed to a career in health services research
- Provide structured mentoring linked to an explicit timeline and benchmarks
- Facilitate the preparation, submission, and successful attainment of individual post-doctoral fellowships and/or career awards (K awards) for trainees
- Foster an interdisciplinary research training program of physicians and other health professionals committed to the transformation of healthcare delivery
The core curriculum includes coursework in the following disciplines: epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, ethics, communication, implementation, and grant writing. These courses are part of the Indiana University Clinical Investigator Training Enhancement (CITE) Program. Fellows may also pursue advanced training in medical informatics in Regenstrief Institute. Fellows will supplement these courses with further study in a variety of areas that may include: health policy, information technology, decision support, medical economics, organizational behavior and management, quality improvement, and qualitative/quantitative research methods. Fellows will have the opportunity to obtain a two-year masters degree in their field of interest.

Training Description
The VA HSR&D Associated Health Post-doctoral Fellowship is a core training program of the VA HSR&D Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice located at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Center is a close partner of Regenstrief Institute, Inc., Indiana University School of Medicine, and Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE).
This two-year fellowship provides research and educational learning opportunities in various aspects of the VA health system. The goal of the Associated Health Post-doctoral Fellowship is to prepare fellows for careers in health services, implementation and operations research, with a particular emphasis on redesigning and transforming healthcare delivery. Fellows gain experience using the VA's internationally recognized quality improvement and medical informatics infrastructure. Senior mentors provide ongoing content and career guidance to fellows to help them understand and contribute to such diverse areas as clinical and management practice improvement, the role of human factors in quality and safety, and systems redesign. The Associated Health Post-doctoral Fellowship program seeks applicants from a variety of clinical, social science and engineering backgrounds.

Training Description
The VA HSR&D Physician Post Resident Fellowship is a core training program of the VA HSR&D Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at the Indianapolis VAMC. The fellowship provides two years of post-residency research, education, and clinical learning opportunities to eligible physicians. Fellows spend approximately 75 percent of their time in research and education and 25 percent in clinical care at the Roudebush VAMC. Senior mentors provide ongoing content and career guidance to fellows during the course of their training. Graduates are expected to be role models in developing, conducting, and evaluating innovative health services and systems transformation research in a variety of clinical settings.
The goals of the VA HSR&D Physician Post Resident Fellowship are to train post-residency physicians to: (1) better understand basic health services and implementation research methods; (2) become immersed in clinical and organizational challenges and opportunities for improvement in the VA health care system; (3) learn to analyze and interpret both clinical and patient-centered information from electronic medical records and directly from patients; (4) conduct a prospective research project; and (5) develop productive careers in academic medicine and/or serving the VA.
Eligible physicians must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency; be board certified or board eligible; be a U.S. citizen; and have an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license. International medical graduates must also have an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate that is valid indefinitely.

Training Description
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Interdisciplinary Patient Safety Fellowship is a one year program offered by the Office of Academic Affiliations and the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) at six competitively selected sites. The purpose of the this fellowship in patient safety is to provide post-residency trained physicians and post doctoral or post masters degree trained associated health professionals (such as nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers and health care administrators) in-depth education in patient safety practice, leadership and research.
The goals of the Indianapolis VA Interdisciplinary Patient Safety Fellowship are to prepare graduates for careers in patient safety leadership, and to provide research training in the areas of redesigning and transforming healthcare delivery to improve quality and safety. Aims include:
- acquisition of practical skills and tools to enhance patient safety in the VA and other health systems;
- understanding the value of systems-based approach to problem solving based upon Human Factors principles;
- understanding and promoting a culture of "Safety Culture" in a health system;
- mastery of research methodologies appropriate to studying patient safety;
- conduct of a project in patient safety; and
- acquiring leadership skills to enhance the safety of health care delivery in a health system.
The fellowship provides one year of educational, program development and research learning opportunities. Fellows spend their time in training and safety program development, evaluation and research activities relevant to the VA. They also complete a two way interactive video curriculum designed by the National Center for Patient Safety. Senior mentors provide ongoing content and career guidance to fellows during the course of their training. Interested candidates should demonstrate a special interest in patient safety, human factors, and/or approaches to creating high reliability organizations.
