The internal medicine and medicine-pediatrics residency programs are led by Lia Logio, M.D. and Alex Djuricich, M.D., respectively. Noell Sinex, M.D. is the Associate Program Director for Ambulatory Education and the VA.
The residency program received recognition for its innovations and is in the process of shifting the focus towards patient-centered care with safety, quality, and system improvement. Dr. Logio was successful in obtaining a Clarian Values Grant to develop and implement a web-based curriculum campus-wide on patient safety while Dr. Djurichich 2nd Dr. John Black secured a Clarian Values Grant to create reports profiling resident physicians' outpatient practices.
The residency program provides an annual teaching retreat led by Drs Glenda Westmoreland and Bob Vu (director of the 3rd year clerkship and 4th year subinternship). Bob has developed a wonderful tool for students to journal and write narrative stories about their experiences around the issues of professionalism, demonstrating the richness and power of personal storytelling in medical education. Meg Gaffney, M.D. and Klaus Hilgarth, M.D. continue to lead the state-wide course on Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM). Dr. Hilgarth developed an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to assess the history taking and physical examination skills of students completing ICM-II.
