J. Marc Overhage, M.D., Ph.D.
Director, Medical Informatics

The Regenstrief Institute’s Medical Informatics Program is a national leader in the use of computer-based information systems to enhance both clinical care and research. The Indianapolis Network for Patient Care (INPC) has linked hospitals in and around Indianapolis to share electronic information and overcome the communication gaps that reduce the efficiency and quality of care. The Surgical Pathology Information Network (SPIN) has created a database of all surgical specimens in INPC hospitals which, in combination with the pooled electronic medical records in INPC, supports studies of the relationships between genetics and disease.

J. Marc Overhage, M.D., Ph.D. serves as CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange which facilitates the movement of clinical data between hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and more than 2500 local physicians’ offices. He has also received a $5 million from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to expand the INPC Statewide. The Regenstrief Medical Record System (RMRS) has more than a billion observations for more than 1.5 million persons who primarily receive care at Wishard Health Services inpatient and outpatient sites, along with IU Medical Group-Primary Care’s 27 offices. The RMRS has recently been cited as the source of more published research articles than any other academic medical informatics program in the country. It also serves as a remarkable resource for prospective and retrospective clinical research.
