Message from the Director

The Indiana University Center for Aging Research was established in 1997 through collaboration between Indiana University, the Indiana University School of Medicine, and the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. Founded in the spirit of collaboration, we have remained true to this spirit through interdisciplinary research that engages the scientific, provider, patient, and lay communities.

The mission of the Center is to improve the health care and self-care of older adults. Our scientists have a particular interest in research to strengthen the nation’s primary care system to better serve the needs of older Americans. We also conduct research to integrate the resources of the health care system with the resources of the social and public health agencies seeking to improve the lives of older adults. Over the past decade, our research has increasingly emphasized the important role of the older adult in achieving their health goals through self-care and self-management.

The Center for Aging Research is located in the Health Information and Technology Sciences building within the offices of the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. Our origins, financial support, and close ongoing relationship with the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. explain our national leadership role at the intersection of geriatric medicine and medical informatics. We have applied the rich information technology resources at Indiana University to explore new models of care for late life depression, dementia, delirium, and other common geriatric syndromes. Much of this work has focused on vulnerable elders cared for in the urban public health system in Indianapolis. Our team also takes special pride in our work to help build the nation’s capacity for aging research through a formal mentorship and faculty development program.

In addition to local philanthropy, the Center for Aging Research receives support through research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and the John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc, among others.
