Clinical Care

Faculty physician specialists within the Department of Medicine provide patient-centered, quality-driven care in all areas of internal medicine across the state of Indiana. In addition to providing care for patients, clinical care is a key component to the education and training of medical students, residents and fellows. Trainees work alongside faculty to enhance clinical care and to progress the field of internal medicine.

Department Specialties

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
    Faculty cardiologists at IU School of Medicine offer clinical expertise in the full range of heart and blood vessel problems, and treatments range from lifestyle modification to implanted heart-assist devices and transplantation. Specialized patient programs in cardiovascular medicine include heart rhythm disorder ablation, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, coronary and peripheral vascular angioplasty, cardiomyopathy and advanced heart failure treatments, and heart valve disorders.
  • Clinical Pharmacology
    The ultimate goal of clinical care in pharmacology at IU School of Medicine is to personalize drug therapy by optimizing beneficial effects, while minimizing adverse effects and cost.
  • Endocrinology
    Faculty endocrinologists at IU School of Medicine provide patient care as part of IU Health Diabetes and Endocrinology team and use the latest medical advances to treat disorders of the endocrine (hormonal) system, including diabetes, thyroid disease and cancer, osteoporosis, and adrenal and pituitary conditions.
  • Gastroenterology/Hepatology
    Expert faculty physicians of the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology at IU School of Medicine practice at IU Health Gastroenterology, providing comprehensive patient care from start to finish, from screening services for early disease detection to advanced diagnostic procedures and leading edge medical and surgical treatments.
  • General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics
    General internists within the Department of Medicine are specially trained in the fields of adult internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, adolescent medicine, geriatrics and OB/GYN. Faculty physicians in this division provide inpatient care at Eskenazi Health, IU Health University Hospital, the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, and at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya.
  • Hematology/Oncology
    Department of Medicine faculty physicians in the Division of Hematology/ Oncology Division provide exceptional patient care at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, focusing on surgical, medical and radiation oncology. Services provided include the treatment and management of bladder, breast, head and neck, kidney, lung, testicular, thyroid, pancreatic, prostate and salivary gland cancers; cardio-oncology; leukemia; and lymphoma.
  • Infectious Diseases
    Infectious disease faculty physicians provide patient care expertise in travel medicine, HIV, intravenous antibiotic therapy, and the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Clinical sites include IU Health University Hospital, IU Health West Multispecialty Clinic, IUHP Infectious Diseases Methodist Clinic, Eskenazi Health, and the Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center.
  • Nephrology
    Faculty physicians in the Division of Nephrology at IU School of Medicine treat and work to prevent kidney diseases, including acute and chronic renal failure, complications of chronic dialysis treatment, hypertension, and kidney stones and cystic disease.
  • Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Occupational Medicine
    Recently recognized as one of the top Pulmonary and Critical Care programs in the United States, faculty physicians within the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Occupational Medicine provide treatment and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), interstitial and immunologic lung disease, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension; interventional pulmonology; and other general pulmonary and critical care services at clinical sites across Indianapolis.
  • Rheumatology
    Faculty rheumatologists within the Department of Medicine at IU School of Medicine accept patients from referring physicians and help to treat and manage an array or rheumatic diseases, including fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, osteoarthritis, myositis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.
