Ride to Remember

On July 16th, Wishard’s Palliative Care Team will embark on a second Ride to Remember (R2R2) in memory of the over 700 patients who have been cared for by Wishard’s Palliative Care program since the first ride in 2009. Unlike the original 40 day cross-country bicycle ride that Dr. Gregory Gramelspacher completed in 2009, this year we have assembled a Wishard Bike Team to ride across the entire state of Indiana in a single day—one way, one day, 160 miles! As before, each mile of this bicycle ride will be dedicated to the memory of one of our patients. Our patients show remarkable strength and courage even as their life draws to a close.

Dr. Greg’s Ride to Remember 2 will remember the lives of those cared for by our Palliative Care Program and honor their families. The donations to our program will enable us to provide invaluable support and comfort for the families and friends of our patients in the years ahead. Every dollar you contribute will be used to support the Wishard Palliative Care Program and the dying poor. To donate please visit our blog at www.ridetoremember.us. For any questions please contact Thomas Whitehead at 630-7767.

Dr. Greg Gramelspacher recognized as 2011 IBJ Healthcare Hero - Physician category!

Now in its 11th year, IBJ's Health Care Heroes program recognizes deserving individuals and organizations in the health care industry. IBJ solicits nominations from the public in five categories, and then a committee of judges from all facets of health care picks three finalists, including a winner in each category.
The five categories are as follows:

  • Community Achievement in Health Care honors a company or organization that has successfully implemented a program to address an acknowledged problem in health care administration or delivery.
  • Advancements in Health Care honors a company or individual primarily responsible for scientific discovery or for development of a new procedure, device or service that can save lives or improve quality of life for a large number of people.
  • Physician honors a physician whose performance on the job is considered exemplary by patients and peers.
  • Non-Physician honors an individual from nursing or allied health fields whose performance in the delivery of care is considered exemplary by patients and peers.
  • Volunteer honors an individual who is not employed in health care but has had a major impact in the delivery of care through volunteer work.

"You're Sick. It's Serious."

A two and a half minute video produced by the AAHPM posted on YouTube to highlight the specialty of Palliative Medicine.

We would like to congratulate and welcome Dr. Jeff Walker and Dr. Kirsten Kahle as our new fellows. Dr. Walker will begin his Fellowship in February 2011. Dr. Kahle will begin her Fellowship in June 2011.

Congratulations to Dr. Colleen Brown, the first Marilyn K. Glick Palliative Care Fellow, on being hired by St. Vincent Health / Palliative Care Program.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported:

"Among patients with metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer, early palliative care led to significant improvements in both quality of life and mood. As compared to with patients receiving standard care, patients receiving early palliative care had less aggressive care at the end of life but longer survival."(Funded by an American Society of Clinical Oncology Career Development Award and philanthropic gifts; ClinicalTrials.gov number: NCT1038271.)
