Dr. Bergstrom is Adjunct Professor of Medicine in at Indiana University School of Medicine where he participates in the teaching and research activities of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology.

He started his 33 year career at Eli Lilly and Company in 1973 as an associate pharmaceutical chemist and pharmacist after graduation from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. In that role, he participated in development of the parenteral formulations of Nebcin (tobramycin), Dobutrex (dobutamine) and Tobrex (tobramycin ophthalmic solution). In those early years, he began to develop an interest in pharmacokinetics and pursued a Master of Science degree in pharmacology from the Butler University doing pharmacokinetic research in animals for his thesis. Then taking an educational leave of absence from Lilly, he continued to pursue his interest in pharmacokinetics by studying under the professorship of Dr. John G. Wagner at The University of Michigan. Upon the completion of that degree in 1980, he rejoined Lilly at the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research and spent the next 29 years using his skill as a pharmacokineticist helping to discover and develop new pharmaceutical agents. His main focus of research was performing Phase 1 to Phase 4 PK/PD studies providing the necessary clinical pharmacology research that brought a number of compounds through the registration process and to a commercial success. Notable accomplishments during his Lilly career include being principally responsible for the pharmacokinetic information for Axid (nizatidine), Prozac (fluoxetine) including Prozac Weekly (an enteric coated once weekly dosage formulation of fluoxetine), Zyprexa (olanzapine) including a rapidly absorbed intramuscular injection, a rapidly disintegrating buccal tablet, and Zyprexa Relprevv (an olanzapine depot intramuscular injection), Symbyax (olanzapine plus fluoxetine) and Cymbalta (duloxetine). During the years at Lilly he also participated in research activities for many other LY compounds and developed an interest in the use of stable isotopes as a means to efficiently conduct pharmacokinetic studies that enabled research on perplexing problems. His research also sought to incorporate the new developments in research tools such as population pharmacokinetics methods, pharmacogenomics, genetics, in vivo and in vitro correlations, and the need to assess the impact of specific enzymes involved in metabolism, specifically CYP1A2 and CYP2D6.

Dr. Bergstrom also has devoted a substantial effort in an active role in professional associations and is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (Fellow, Member-At-Large, Section Chair, and Past President), American College of Clinical Pharmacology (Fellow), American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and American Pharmacist Association.
