Dr. Chalasani conducts collaborative clinical research focused on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and drug induced liver injury. His research on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is supported by federal funding in the form of UO-1 and RO-1 grants. He is one of the principle investigators of the NIDDK funded NASH Clinical Research Network established in 2002 to conduct clinical and mechanistic research related to obesity-related nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. One of his focuses is to investigate the role of microsomal enzymes such as CYP2E1 and CYP4A11 in the pathogenesis of NASH. His group is also developing a swine model of obesity-related fatty liver disease in Ossabaw pigs in collaboration with Dr. Sturek’s group. His research on human drug induced liver injury is also supported by federal funding and is one of the principle investigators of the NIH funded Drug Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN). His previous work showed that patients with underlying liver disease are not at higher risk for hepatotoxicity from agents such as statins and TZDs.
