The Division of Clinical Pharmacology and the Department of Pediatrics have established a fellowship in Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology that involves faculty from both departments. The purpose of this program is to provide highly motivated physicians with training that will allow them to be experts in the study and use of drugs in children. While it has been clear for many years that children are not simply small adults with regard to pharmacotherapy, the FDA now strongly encourages companies to evaluate drugs in children before they are made available. This has profoundly changed our approach to the use of medicines in children, and has made clear the overwhelming amount of research that needs to be conducted in order to optimize the treatment of a wide range of important diseases in children. The large and diverse patient population at Riley Hospital offers an exceptional opportunity to study applications of clinical pharmacology in a wide range of pediatric diseases within a focused training program designed to generate leaders in this emerging field.
