Bio

Dr. Mariash received his MD from the University of California, San Diego, in 1972 and entered an internal medicine residency program at the University of Minnesota. After his internal medicine residency, he completed his military obligation with the U.S. Army from 1975 to 1977 and returned to the University of Minnesota to undertake his endocrinology fellowship training. He was awarded an NIH “K” award in 1980 for studies on thyroid hormone regulation of lipid metabolism. He remained continuously funded for his thyroid hormone basic science research by the NIH and the VA from 1980 through 2008. His research, clinical activity, and educational endeavors led to his promotion to full professor with tenure. From 1998 to 2008 he was also the Director of the Endocrinology Division at the University of Minnesota and the endocrine fellowship program director. In 2008 he moved to Indiana University Health to be the medical director of the Methodist Research Institute (now called the Enterprise Clinical Research Operations) where he remains active in clinical based research activity. He is also a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Indiana University and is the IU site PI on the NIH diabetes study called GRADE. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Endocrinology/Metabolism. He maintains a strong interest in thyroid disease and is a member of the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society. His interests also include computer programming as he was the first to develop both the hardware and software to do automated quantitative image analysis in 1979 and has produced several endocrine related Apps (available in Apple App Store) for diabetes and thyroid management.
