Samer Gawrieh, MD

Dr. Gawrieh earned his medical degree from Aleppo University School of Medicine in Aleppo, Syria. He then moved to the US to pursue advanced medical training. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, then a Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, followed by a Transplant Hepatology visiting fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Transplant Hepatology.

In 2004, Dr. Gawrieh joined the faculty at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he later served as the Medical Director of the Liver Transplantation program. At the end of 2013, he moved to Indiana to join efforts with the outstanding team of clinicians and investigators at Indiana University School of Medicine, to advance the science and practice of liver disease.

Dr. Gawrieh’s clinical and translational research focuses on different aspects of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma.  He is a nationally recognized expert in liver disease and is funded by the NIH to study alcohol-associated hepatitis and fatty liver disease in persons living with HIV. Dr. Gawrieh is also the Clinical Director of the Data Coordinating Center for the NIH-sponsored alcoholic hepatitis network, a national network of eight leading academic centers in the US that studies different aspects and therapeutics of alcohol-associated hepatitis. Dr. Gawrieh has served on multiple NIH-study sections and the Editorial Board of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Gawrieh is currently a Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Director of the Hepatology Research Fellowship Program in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Indiana University School of Medicine.
