The General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics Division has the dual mission of providing primary medical care and consultative internal medicine services, and a large health services research base. Health services research studies the delivery and planning of medical care to optimize the outcomes of patients and the cost of delivering it.

Geriatrics has a mission of promoting successful aging by improving the quality of health care services for older adults through education, research, and the interdisciplinary team approach to enhance continuity of care, cost effectiveness, quality of life, and satisfaction with care.
