Biographical Summary:

Molecular biologist, Loren Field, PhD, is a professor of medicine, of physiology and biophysics and of pediatrics. He received his PhD at State University of New York at Buffalo and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Foswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York. Prior to his affiliation with Indiana University, Dr. Field was a staff investigator at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, New York.

Dr. Field and his IU colleagues were the first to show that mammalian heart cells can regenerate. His current research is focused on manipulating specific genes that promote heart muscle growth by coaxing healthy cells to proliferate. The success of this research would offer the potential for seriously ill patients whose tissue has been damaged by heart attack to "re-grow" their own hearts.
