Welcome to the IUSM Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship

I am delighted that you are considering our fellowship at the IU School of Medicine!  We are dedicated to training and educating compassionate physicians in the care of patients with life-threatening illness.  Since 2005, we have been committed to developing leaders in the field of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  Our past fellows have gone on to practice and assume leadership positions throughout the country.

Our fellowship offers a one year clinical fellowship.  During that time, fellows will experience a variety of clinical environments, Eskenazi Health (which serves as the flagship site of the fellowship), Richard L. Roudebush VA, IU Health Hospitals, including Riley Hospital for Children, St. Vincent Hospital and Hospice, Westside Village Nursing Center and local area hospices.  Fellows are exposed to a variety of patient populations throughout their fellowship.

We offer unique opportunities to our fellows.  For the last few years, our fellows have participated in PalliTALK, a communication skills course for palliative care fellows. Several former fellows have done an elective rotation with IU-Kenya Partnership. Through this elective, fellows work with the palliative care service at Moi Teaching and Referral hospital (MTRH). Besides our fellowship conference series, fellows also benefit from other learning opportunities which can be gained through the IUPUI RESPECT center, Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics and many other local resources.

We deeply appreciate the philanthropic support we have garnered for our fellowship, which is statewide and beyond.  The Fellowship started with the support of the Robert and Marilyn Gramelspacher Fellowship fund in 2005.  The Gramelspacher family and community in Jasper, IN (Southern Indiana) have played a major role in this funding.  In 2017-18, Dr. Elaina DiOrio is our 10th Robert and Marilyn Gramelspacher Fellow.  Since 2009, we have benefitted greatly from major support through the Glick Family Fund and Central Indiana Community Foundation.  Dr. Johanna Coughlin is our 9th Marilyn K. Glick Fellow.  This year, we are proud to announce that our support has extended to the Northern part of Indiana.  The first Vera Z. Dwyer Fellow is Dr. Kayla Herget.

Please see this video which highlights the vital role of philanthropy for maintaining and growing the mission of our fellowship.  We thank all of our donors and the support of our fellowship institutions.  With generous support this year through Riley Hospital for Children, we have our second Riley Pediatric Palliative Fellow, Dr. Peter Baenziger.  We are grateful to have four fellows for the first time in 2017-18!

Please see here for more information about applying to the fellowship. We look forward to answering any of your questions and thank you for considering our program!
