Several aspects of medicine require additional testing and specialized skills in the performance of tests to assure the most accurate results and the best outcomes. In order to achieve the best results for our patients and referring physicians, the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine has developed state-of-the-art facilities with highly trained staff to support the clinical needs of our patients and the research directions of the faculty.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Histoplasmosis and Other Fungal Diseases
Interstitial & Immunologic Lung Disease
The Pulmonary Division at the Indiana University School of Medicine has collaborated with several of its partners to develop specialized programs for care of patients with immunologic lung disease. All physicians are board-certified pulmonologists with special interest and expertise in interstitial and immunologic disorders of the lung. This program offers education for patients, trainees, and physicians, diligent monitoring of treatment side effects, novel treatments and research protocols for eligible patients, a CLIA certified bronchoalveolar lavage laboratory offering lung cell sub typing, and a full profile of medical services dedicated to the proper diagnosis of immunologic lung diseases.
Interventional Pulmonology
Several physicians in the Pulmonary Division are recognized world experts in interventional pulmonology, bringing the latest bronchoscopic and thoroscopic techniques to the care of patients with multiple pulmonary diseases.
Lung Cancer
Pulmonary Hypertension
Tuberculosis

Allergy Clinic
The Pulmonary Division has an allergist who routinely sees patients at several sites in Indianapolis.
Bronchoalveolar Lavage Laboratory
This Clia-certified laboratory is based at the Richard Roudebush VA Medical Center. The lab provides analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage cells through performance of differential counts, lymphocyte phenotyping, hemosiderin staining for assessment of alveolar hemorrhage, and screening for histiocytosis X.
High Risk Asthma Clinic
As part of the Indiana University Asthma Clinical Research Center patients with severe or difficult to control asthma are seen in a specialized clinic where extensive evaluation of their underlying asthma is undertaken.
Pleural Disease Clinic
Patients with disorders of the pleura (or the lining of the lung) now have access to state-of-the-art treatment in the Pleural Disease Clinic. Because of the importance of these disorders and the need for advanced care, a clinic was established by the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The clinicians in this clinic have special expertise and have specialized in the evaluation and treatment of pleural disorders. These disorders include pleural effusions, malignant effusions, pneumothorax, mesothelioma, and a variety of other pleural disorders. In addition to the routine procedures used in these evaluations, we are one of the leaders in medical thoracoscopy -- a procedure that allows direct visualization of the pleura, visually-directed biopsies and an aggressive form of pleurodesis. Such procedures are incorporated into a multi-disciplinary approach where we confer with specialists in radiology, surgery, oncology, and laboratory medicine to assist in the management patients. This creates an environment where the most advanced approaches may be used in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders to improve our patient's response to treatment and their quality-of-life.

Sarcoidosis Clinics
The Pulmonary Division at the Indiana University School of Medicine has developed specialized programs for care of patients with Sarcoidosis. All physicians are board-certified pulmonologists with special interest and expertise as "sarcoidologists".
