The Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at Indiana University is a combined three year program that is fully accredited by the ACGME. New Fellows are selected through the NRMP subspecialty match that occurs in June of the year preceding the beginning of fellowship. Applications for fellowship are made through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). See the ERAS web site for application and timeline information. Interviews are scheduled from January to April. Further information on the application process can be obtained by contacting the Pulmonary Office.
The program provides the training needed for several important areas of pulmonary medicine, including basic research, outcomes research, clinical trials, and clinical teaching. Training programs can be tailored to the individual needs and desires of each fellow. Opportunities for continued training beyond the third year of fellowship are readily available. Those seeking a career in academic medicine often pursue this additional training in order to improve their chances of securing a faculty appointment. Fellows have extensive interaction with medicine residents and medical students while on clinical rotations and the fellows are expected to be active in the educational process at all levels.
The strengths of the Indiana University Methodist Hospital fellowship program are clearly evident:
- Venue diversity - Four integrated venues that give a broad range of clinical experiences which are likely unmatched at other programs: University Hospital as a quaternary referral center, Methodist Hospital as a large tertiary referral center and community practice hospital,
Wishard Memorial Hospital (County), and the VA Medical Center (tertiary referral and primary care). All venues are accessible by short walk or monorail ride.

- Clinical diversity - Experts in all aspects of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep, Allergy, Transplant, Trauma, and Occupational Medicine (Pulmonary division faculty) (Methodist teaching faculty)
- Research diversity - The best biomedical researchers of Indiana University, Purdue University, and Methodist Research Institute work closely with clinicians and physician scientists to mentor fellows who choose research as their primary career goal. The research facilities are located within the hospitals and integrated into the Medical Center campuses (current research).
- Educational priorities - The first month (July) of fellowship is procedural and didactic with no call. Clinical educational activities are supplemented by core didactics and case conferences.
- Outpatient clinics - All fellows will have 36 months of mentored outpatient clinic experiences.
- Four weeks of vacation per year
- Indianapolis - a thriving Midwest metropolis
You can learn more about our nation's 12th largest city at our Internal Medicine site, or the Convention and Visitor's Center official web site.
- Career development diversity and flexibility as outlined in the different tracks available to the trainee: Clinical or Academic.
During the first year of fellowship (12 clinical months are completed in the first year), the candidate will be asked to declare a clinical or academic pathway for their career development. The "flex" months will then be designated for extra research time or elective time. Research flex months are distributed differently to give maximum amount of uninterrupted research time. (Note: 18 months of clinical time are required for ACGME eligibility to sit for both pulmonary and critical care medicine boards.)
