Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program

Fellowship Overview

The Sleep Medicine fellowship is a 12-month long ACGME-accredited interdisciplinary program based in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine and is co-sponsored by the Clarian Indiana University Hospital and Clarian Riley Hospital for Children. Its aim is to train Sleep Medicine physicians, to diagnose and effectively manage adult and pediatric patients with a wide spectrum of sleep disorders in a multidisciplinary fashion.

The pre-requisite for entry into the program is completion of training in Neurology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Pulmonary Medicine and Pediatrics. Preference will be given to those with Fellowship training.

Faculty in the Department of Medicine, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry, Neurology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Dental school are involved in the educational process.

We treat the entire spectrum of sleep disorders including but not limited to sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, and the interactions between sleep and sleep disorders in medical and psychiatric illness. We encourage fellows to customize their training with elective experiences that will enhance their clinical skill development. The fellow has outpatient sleep medicine clinics in two different locations at the University Hospital. The trainee has his/her continuity clinic two half days a week. There are mandatory rotations with ENT, OMFS, Neurology, Pediatrics and inpatient Psychiatry. The fellow reads sleep studies at the Riley Children's Hospital Sleep Disorders Center (Indiana's only pediatric sleep clinic and offers evaluation of children ranging in age from premature newborns to 18 years old), Methodist and Indiana University Hospital Sleep Laboratory (an eight bed sleep laboratory that performs sleep studies on weekday and weekend nights). We work to accommodate patients who work different shift schedules and conduct over 2000 studies a year. Indiana University Hospital Bariatric Center for Excellence provides the opportunity for fellows to care for a group of patients with unique health needs. Elective training experiences can be set-up in other areas for interested fellows. Weekly didactic lectures, journal clubs, weekly scores rounds with RPSGT and a multidisciplinary sleep medicine grand rounds/research conference complement the clinical training. Clinical and collaborative research is encouraged.

Our application timeline is October 1 to November 15 of each year. You may apply on-line. We will contact you by email once we reviewed your application.
