General Medicine Wards

General Medicine Wards - Wishard Hospital
This is a busy inpatient teaching service consisting of one attending, one senior resident, two interns, and 3 junior medical students. There may also be one senior medical student and 1 or 2 pharmacy students on the service on any given month. Wishard wards sees many common medical problems, the bread and butter medicine, but additionally has some very interesting cases and diagnostic dilemmas. Wishard Hospital is the public county hospital serving the indigent of Indianapolis, including the large growing Hispanic population. It is a level one trauma center and home of the only burn unit in the state of Indiana. Unlike most county hospitals, it has a robust electronic medical record system to facilitate care. There are 6 "traditional" ward teams with call every 6th night.

General Medicine Wards - VA Hospital
This is an inpatient teaching service consisting of one attending, one senior resident, two interns, 1 subintern, and 2 third year medical students. The veterans cared for are mostly older adults with multiple chronic medical problems but additionally is the referral VA for heart disease and cancer. There is a closed ICU format, and transfer of patients to and from the ICU will be routine. There are 5 ward teams with team call every 5th night. On call days, the ward team members are on a staggered schedule such that the resident arrives later than the interns on the day of call and leaves later the following day after call.

General Medicine Wards - Methodist Hospital
The inpatient teaching service at Methodist cares for a diverse group of patients in this very large community hospital under the supervision of a private hospitalist group. The teams are structured to provide a multidisciplinary approach to patient care with input from pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, and a geriatrics coordinator. The call schedule will be q5 for upper level residents and they will also have responsibility for Krannert Cardiology admissions (along with their general medicine admissions) when on call. Each team will have a resident and intern working directly with a hospitalist staff. The staff will coordinate admissions from the ER and delegate teaching patients to the intern and resident separately. A journal club will also be provided during this rotation and some consultative general medicine experience, including preoperative and peri-operative management.
