Emergency Medicine - Wishard Hospital
Residents are required to do one ER month their 2nd year and one month their 3rd year. During a shift, residents are assigned to either the Front Area (lower acuity) or the Observation Area (higher acuity). However, residents are assigned to shifts in both areas during the rotation so that, during the month, they are seeing "all comers." Emergency Medicine physicians supervise residents 24 hours daily. Residents are involved in the care of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department except those with major trauma. The curriculum specifically administered for Internal Medicine (and Med/Peds) residents consists of a workshop on wound management and a web-based self-study component. Although there is no call, shifts are nine hours long and are scheduled around the clock every day.

Emergency Medicine Elective - Methodist Hospital
Residents are scheduled from 18-22 (depending on the length of the month) nine-hour shifts. There is a combination of day (7am-4pm), midday (10am-7pm), evening (4pm-1am) and night (10pm-7am) shifts. Night and weekend shifts are evenly distributed among those residents on the schedule for the month. Under staff supervision, residents can see all types of emergency medicine patients based on their comfort level, including minor trauma, pediatric patients, and ob/gyn patients. Residents will have an opportunity to observe the trauma team evaluating Level One major trauma cases.
Resident schedules are made up by the Emergency Medicine chief resident. All schedule requests should be made at least six weeks prior to the start of the month. Due to many last minute changes in who will be rotating with us, the schedule will not be available until 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the month. All reasonable requests (see below) will be honored.

About four hours of lectures weekly are coordinated by the Emergency Medicine department and made available to all rotating residents who are not scheduled to work at the time of these conferences. In addition, residents are able to access on online self-study curriculum and two hands-on, faculty taught two-hour workshops: one on wound management and one on minor trauma /splinting. The online curriculum and workshops are specifically designed for non-Emergency Medicine rotators. If you will be rotating at Wishard in the Emergency Department, you will have access to these same workshops so do not worry if you are not able to participate in them when you are on your Methodist EMTC month.

This rotation is considered a consult month and has no call responsibilities. Computer passwords will be assigned on the mandatory orientation session on the first day of the rotation. Residents may choose to take one week (maximum 9 days considering the weekends before and after the week off) of their vacation during this rotation, which will reduce the total number of ER shifts to 14-17 (again depending on the length of the month.) If you are not taking vacation, you may request two days off during the month that we "guarantee" that you will be able to have. (If everyone asks for the same two days, a lottery system is used.) Most people request a weekend off and there is seldom a problem with too many people asking for the same days. These two days will not be your only days off, but we cannot promise more than two requests due to the need to accommodate clinic schedules and other residents rotating with us.
