Endocrinology

Endocrinology/Diabetes Elective
The overall goal of the Endocrinology rotation is to provide the resident with a broad based clinical experience in Endocrinology upon which to build a solid foundation for his/her lifetime of clinical practice. A variety of teaching methods are utilized including specific conferences (Endocrinology Grand Rounds), topic-driven group discussions (Endocrinology Case Conference), case-driven small group discussions (Housestaff Case Conference series), patient-stimulated small group discussions as part of the in-patient consultative service and patient-stimulated one-on-one teaching in the out-patient setting. In addition, residents have strongly suggested reading during the rotation, which includes key references selected from an ongoing updated reference list. On the inpatient consult service, Residents are assigned either to University Hospital (UH) plus Wishard Memorial Hospital (WMH) plus Methodist Hospital (MH) or to the Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) for two weeks each. The UH-WMH-MH team for inpatient consultations consists of an endocrine faculty member, an endocrine fellow, the endocrine resident and sometimes a senior medical student. When consultations are infrequent at the VA, as is often the case, the VA resident is asked to also make rounds with the UH-WMH-MH team. UH-WMH-MH consultation rounds are held daily Monday-Friday. Endocrinology is primarily an outpatient subspecialty, and all the endocrinology consultation residents attend approximately four half-day endocrine clinics weekly (except if there is a conflict with the resident's General Medicine Clinic, then the latter takes precedence). In addition, there are off-site clinics that interested residents are able to attend to broaden their exposure to outpatient endocrinology.
