Genetics

Genetics Elective
Residents will be exposed to the clinical practice of medical and biochemical genetics. In addition to the usual clinical skills, they will learn pedigree assessment, dysmorphology evaluation, and application of a literature review in the diagnostic evaluation. They will learn about the various genetic testing technologies available, appropriate use in the clinical setting, and the contextual interpretation of genetic test results. The residents will be exposed to the genetic counseling process in various settings, including cancer genetics and biochemical genetics. The residents will also learn about novel therapies for various metabolic disorders; relevance of basic science to routine clinical care will be emphasized. This rotation consists of a variety of outpatient clinics, clinical laboratory experience, inpatient consultation experience, departmental grand rounds and research seminars. In addition, interested residents will have the option of writing case reports and participating in other research projects.
