Geriatrics Block
This is a required rotation. The goal of the rotation is to provide insight into the unique problems of older adults. Residents will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in the care of older adults that is necessary regardless of choice of a primary care or subspecialty career path. Toward meeting these goals, residents will rotate to a variety of venues including primary care, consultative and subspecialty geriatrics clinics; extended care facilities; and an Acute Care for Elders Service. Residents will make housecalls including one housecall to one of their continuity clinic patients. Geriatric conferences occur every morning and cover a variety of clinically relevant topics (drug prescribing in older adults, delirium, dementia, depression, geriatric assessment, falls, etc.). All residents participate in evidence-based review of the geriatrics literature and deliver a short presentation based on that systematic review to a multidisciplinary audience at the end of the rotation. Vacation is allowed up to a maximum of 7 days.
