Bone Marrow Transplant
The resident is part of a team that includes an attending, a hematology/oncolgy fellow, and a nurse-practitioner. The resident has the opportunity to provide direct patient care for both patients in the BMT unit and those in the outpatient setting. Residents also attend one half-day clinic each week. Residents will participate in the treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. Areas to be covered will include high-dose chemotherapy administration, indications for blood product support, support of neutropenic patients, immune reconstitution, and selection of donors. The resident will have close interactions with infectious disease renal, intensive care, and pulmonary consultants.
Heme/Onc Consults at Wishard Hospital
At Wishard the resident is part of a team that includes two attendings (one for hematology and one for oncology) and a fellow. This service averages 40-50 consults per month. The resident is expected to attend two half-day clinics per week, Hematology Clinic and Oncology Clinic. There is also a half-day Breast Cancer Clinic for those with a special interest in breast cancer. A conference schedule for all of the Hematology/Oncology conferences will be provided. The same conferences are available as for the other rotations.
Hematology/Oncology Consults at University Hospital
At University Hospital, the resident is part of a team that includes 2 attendings/fellows. The resident can select two clinics to attend, from among the different Oncology and Hematology Clinics at the Cancer Pavilion. There are two Oncology and two Hematology conferences each week at the Cancer Pavilion. There is an additional lecture from 3-4PM each weekday to supplement the teaching of morning rounds where an informal discussion on a relevant topic in hematology and oncology takes place.
Hematology/Oncology Clinic Rotation
This rotation will be the replacement of the former special elective in Hematology-Oncology, and will be solely an outpatient experience.
Residents will be exposed to the diverse outpatient care of the patient with a malignancy or a benign hematologic disorder. Several different sites will be utilized this month: the Cancer Pavilion clinics, the VA hospital clinics, the Wishard outpatient clinics, the Spring Mill clinics, the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center clinics, and the Bone Marrow Transplant clinics. This rotation will allow the resident to develop a more realistic perspective of the daily care of patients with Hematologic and Oncologic disorders. The resident will see patients at all stages of their disease: at initial diagnosis, during their therapy, in long-term follow-up, and during end-of-life discussions. The residents will be expected to independently see and evaluate both new and return patients. The Course Director will coordinate the schedules, but the residents will be assigned to numerous different attending physicians throughout the month. A daily lecture series (at 3pm) is provided during this course. Residents will be expected to attend the Friday morning Cancer Center Grand Rounds series as well.
