Infectious Diseases Consults at University Hospital
The resident sees infectious disease consults at University Hospital. The service sees about 50 consults per month. The month begins with an orientation session at which a core book is distributed. There is an organized campus-wide case discussion series held at University Hospital Monday and Thursday afternoon (4:00 pm) that reviews core infectious disease topics. Each Tuesday at 4 pm there is a campus-wide case conference held also at University Hospital. Issues that frequently arise in the course of patient care include HIV care problems (in concert with the inpatient service), ICU infections, unexplained fevers, meningoencephalitis, orthopedic infections, infections of implanted devices, and many others. Frequently encountered pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative bacilli. Consult residents receive one day off per week on this rotation.

Infectious Diseases Immunosuppressed Service at University Hospital
This is a special consult rotation that provides consultations to the solid organ (liver, kidney, kidney-pancreas, multivisceral and less commonly lung or heart) and bone marrow transplant services and the hematology and oncology services. The service sees about 20-30 consults each month. Commonly encountered problems include fevers of uncertain cause in chemotherapy patients, cytomegalovirus infections, fungal infections, line infections, complex infections and pneumonias due to uncommon pathogens. This rotation may be especially useful for residents considering fellowships in infectious diseases, pulmonology, or hematology. The core lecture series in ID is available for the resident.

Infectious Disease at VA Hospital
The VA consult service sees approximately 15 patients per month. Consult residents also spend Tuesday morning of each week in the Infectious Diseases Clinic. The month begins with an orientation session at which a core book is distributed. Because the service is typically slower at the VA than elsewhere, there is an unusually great amount of reading time. There is an organized campus-wide case discussion series held at University Hospital Monday and Thursday afternoons (4:00 pm) that reviews core infectious disease topics. Each Tuesday at 4 pm there is a campus-wide case conference held also at University Hospital. Residents receive one day off per week on this rotation.

Infectious Disease at Methodist Hospital
During this month, residents will work with the following Infectious Diseases specialists at Methodist Hospital: Dr. Mattison, Dr. Streit, and Dr. Wack. The degree of inpatient versus outpatient care can be varied according to the resident’s individual interests, but in general 60-90% of patients are inpatients at Methodist Hospital and 10-30% are outpatients seen in the Infectious Diseases of Indiana clinic across the street from Methodist. Pediatric patients can be seen as well as adults. Objectives of this rotation are as follows: to develop a clinical approach to patients with fever, to employ diagnostic testing in a rational manner, to understand basic clinical microbiology as it applies to bedside patient management, to master principles of cost-effective antibiotic utilization, and to acquire inpatient disease management skills over a wide range of complex clinical problems (including infections related to surgery, trauma, and immunocompromising conditions). The most commonly seen inpatient problems include sepsis, pneumonia, osteomyelitis, cellulitis, fever of unknown origin, peritonitis/intra-abdominal abscess, and neutropenic fever. There is an Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology core lecture series. There is no overnight call responsibility during this month.

ID Consults at Wishard Hospital
The Wishard consult service sees approximately 50 patients per month. Consult residents also spend Monday or Thursday morning of each week in the Infectious Diseases Clinic. The month begins with an orientation session at which a core book is distributed. There is a campus-wide organized case discussion series held at University Hospital Monday and Thursday afternoon (4:00 pm) that reviews core infectious disease topics. Each Tuesday at 4 pm there is a campus-wide case conference held also at University Hospital. Wishard is a good place to see patients with HIV-related problems, endocarditis, ICU infections, device-related infections, septic arthritis, and many more. Residents receive one day off per week on this rotation.
