Kenya Rotation
This a two month rotation is located in Eldoret, Kenya. The rotation is designed to give residents a unique experience in third world medicine that cannot be gleaned from reading a book. Residents will primarily round at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital with Kenyan medical students, trainees, and other team members on patients from the small city of Eldoret and surrounding rural areas. Some of the common diseases seen include malaria, TB, meningitis, and numerous complications of AIDS. Residents are expected to be both learners and teachers within this system. Most residents also choose to spend some time in a rural HIV clinic where IU is leading the way in treating victims of the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. In order to enroll in this rotation, residents must attend mandatory meetings typically held in May by the course director. Credit is given for one ward month and one elective for this rotation. Scheduling must be coordinated with pediatrics and med-peds residents, so space in any given month is limited. Residents are required to take at least one week of vacation during this 2-month rotation.
