Neurology Consults
During this one-month elective, Internal Medicine residents participate in the evaluation and management of neurological patients in the outpatient clinic setting, on the inpatient neurological consultation service, or both depending on the choice of the resident. In the outpatient clinics residents may choose to see patients with various neurology faculty in the Regenstrief Neurology Clinic or in the Indiana University NOC Clinic. General Diagnostic Clinic as well as neurology subspecialty clinics are available to the rotating residents who may select specific clinics or faculty with whom to work during the month. General Diagnostic Clinic, MDA/Neuromuscular Clinic, ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic, Movement Disorder Clinic, Epilepsy Clinic, and Stroke Clinic are examples of subspecialty activities that may be of particular interest to the rotating resident. On the consultation service at Wishard Hospital or IU Hospital the resident works with the consult team seeing patients with common inpatient neurological disorders, including altered mental status, stroke, seizures, neuropathy, etc. During the month Internal Medicine residents are invited to the daily morning report during which patients seen on call by the neurology residents are presented to the Chairman for educational discussion. In addition, the rotating residents are invited to attend the Neurology conference schedule that typically meets over the noon hour. There are no night call requirements for Internal Medicine residents nor are there any weekend coverage requirements unless the Medicine resident chooses to do so. Vacation is allowed during the rotation. Evaluation – At the end of the month the rotating resident will perform a neurological exam under the observation of a faculty neurologist in order to receive constructive advice on how to improve the examination skills. Secondly, in order to assist Medicine residents with preparation for their board exams, the resident will take a multiple choice board style exam and then review all of the questions and answers with the Neurology faculty.
